How do I use the virtual examiner?

Our virtual examiner is a helpful tool when you're practising OSCEs solo, especially alongside our AI-powered virtual patients. The virtual examiner can mark your performance and give constructive feedback on your communication skills.

Who has access to the virtual examiner?

You can access the virtual examiner in one of two ways:

By subscribing to the OSCE Stations collection - AI marking and feedback are then included for those stations
By purchasing AI credits: this allows you to use the virtual examiner with your own personal stations, even if you don't have an OSCE Stations subscription

Without a subscription, AI marking costs 1 credit per checklist and AI examiner feedback costs 1 credit.

What is the virtual examiner?

The virtual examiner is an AI tool that observes your interaction with a virtual patient - whether spoken or typed - and provides structured feedback.

It can:

Mark the OSCE checklist
Provide free text feedback on your communication and overall performance

The virtual examiner does not ask you the examiner questions during marking. If the station has them, they come as a separate step afterwards.

How do I get feedback from the virtual examiner?

Practise a history taking or counselling station with a virtual patient
Speak or type to the patient. Your conversation needs to be at least 500 characters long for AI examiner feedback to be available
When you're finished, click End consultation, then Go to marking
On the Choose assessment method screen, pick AI marking to have the AI mark the checklist from your conversation. The alternative, Self mark, lets you review and mark it yourself
The examiner will complete the OSCE checklist. You can review and adjust it if needed
Work through the Questions step if the station has examiner questions, then click Complete station
On your results you'll see a summary score, with the option to generate free text AI-powered examiner feedback

The feedback is designed to be constructive and actionable. If something doesn't seem right, you can report it to us using the Leave us feedback button.

Tip: if you don't see the option to request AI examiner feedback, this is because your conversation was too short. You'll need at least 500 characters for the virtual examiner to activate.
